State of the Arts

(or, news from the front)

THE GOOD NEWS: thanks to a partial restoration of the BLS budget, the worst-case scenario has been averted and a majority of the arts teachers and programs will be back next year. This would not have happened without the amazing outpouring of student, alumni, parent and community support for the arts program. We are deeply grateful to everyone who spoke up, and prouder than ever to be involved with the arts at Boston Latin School.

THE BAD NEWS: While the outcome is better than it might have been, we are still losing three teachers: Mr. Byron, Mr. Charig and Ms. Crewdson will be moving on. Anyone who has been a student or the parent of a student in a class led by one of these three talented and dedicated professionals knows what an enormous loss their departure will be to BLS. Ms. Crewdson will be replaced by a half-time drama teacher; Mr. Byron's and Mr. Charig's classes will be eliminated or covered by reassignment of remaining faculty.

We will use this page to continue to provide updates on how next year's program is shaping up and what we are doing (and what you can do) to raise funds, leverage resources, and create new opportunities for BLS arts students.
